City of Albany adopts Memorandum of Understanding for Harlem Revitalization Project

ALBANY, Ga. – The city of Albany is looking to take a major step forward with their Harlem Revitalization Project.

We toured the area with Ward 6 Commissioner, Demetrius Young in late 2023…

And… just around nine months later, the city is on the verge of signing on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

“We hope that all of the terms and conditions that are set forth in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Harlem Renaissance Corporation and the city will be agreeable terms so we can get this worthwhile, desperately needed project underway,” said Demetrius Young, Ward 6 Commissioner, City of Albany.

Should everything pass, Commissioner Young gave us a small outline of what would come next.

“Absolutely will give us the green light to start breaking ground and start putting our resources on the ground to revitalize Harlem. A desperately needed area of revitalization here in Albany,” said Commissioner Young.

Commissioner Young has been speaking with people across south Albany for the better part of 2024 about the Harlem Revitalization Plan.

And… he’s hoping that Tuesday is finally day it starts coming together.

“We’ve been waiting a long time since last October to get this done, so it would definitely go ahead and get us jump start it to getting this project underway. There are a lot of things that people are waiting on in terms of development here in Albany and none more important than revitalizing the Harlem business district,” said Commissioner Young.

As the city signs off on the memorandum, young hopes the vision for the revitalized neighborhood isn’t far off from finally becoming a reality.

The city of Albany officially adopted the Memorandum of Understanding just after 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.
