Congressman Sanford Bishop announces $270,000 in FAA funds to expand Southwest Georgia Regional Airport
ALBANY, Ga. – In other developments, Congressman Sanford Bishop announced that the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport has been awarded $270,000 dollars through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The funds will allow the current asphalt pavement to be replaced with concrete. The improvements are expected to boost tourism in southwest Georgia and enhance safety features.
In June, the airport unveiled a $15 million dollar state-of-the-art hangar and terminal, funded by federal grants and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
The airport plans to continue its expansion with federal support, but the immediate focus is on utilizing the newly received funds.
We spoke with David Hamilton, the airport’s transportation director, about how the funding is being put to good use.
“Well that $270,000 will be used to redesign our Taxiway Sierra, it needs a rehabilitation, so we’ll use that money to design that project. Well we do appreciate Sanford Bishop and his office getting grant money for Southwest Georgia Regional Airport, those funds benefit our community as we improve safety features for the airport. It’s an all around win for the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport,” said David Hamilton, Transportation Director.
Southwest Georgia Regional Airport plans to make the upgrades later next month.
