Lowndes Co. EMA prepares citizens for hurricane season one year after Idalia
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lowndes County EMA officials are working diligently to prepare its citizens for what’s predicted to be a very active hurricane season.
“If you stay prepared, you won’t have to get prepared,” said Megan Barwick, Lowndes County Public Information Officer (PIO).
Strong and concise words from Lowndes County Public Information Officer (PIO) Megan Barwick, as last year, Hurricane Idalia did serious damage to parts of Lowndes county.
“If you ride throughout the county you will see, there’s still some unstable trees, just from the amount of wind that we received from Hurricane Idalia,” said Barwick.
So, hurricane preparations must start in our own homes first.
“We do encourage residents to go ahead and clean those shrubs, limbs, off of their property; prepare your property and your house for any type of severe weather we may see through the hurricane season,” said Barwick.
Valdosta and Lowndes EMA also would urge citizens to sign up for the Code Red Alert System.
“It allows their notification system, to push out emergency notifications in the event that we have severe weather, its also used for missing persons. Any type of emergency that we feel needs to be pushed out we can do it,” said Barwick.
Barwick also tells me it’s essential to have what she calls an emergency preparedness kit…
“It’s very important to have the emergency preparedness kit, that’s non perishable food items, water, dog and pet food, medicines that you may need, hygiene supplies anything that you and your family needs to help you in the event you lose power,” said Barwick.
And… for those of you that have pets, proper preparation will need to be made for them as well.
“We do have local ordinances that are in place if you neglect your pet, you could be in some trouble with law enforcement,” said Barwick.
Remember… if you stay prepared, you won’t have to get prepared!
