Mothers Against Murders and Suicide (MAMAS) group unites grieving mothers amidst tragedy, striving for change
ALBANY, Ga. – A new Albany group is bringing mothers together… One in which they’re united by tragedy and striving for change.
The group in question is called Mothers Against Murders and Suicide (MAMAS) and has gotten the ball rolling thanks to Assistant Attorney General, Michael Tabarrok as he’s seen the long term impact these tragedies have had on mothers…
Specifically when he brought two mothers together who had been grieving over the loss of their children in homicides.
“When I was actually sitting down and talking to them, and getting to know them better than I already did; that’s when it became apparent, it’s necessary. Both of these mothers felt that they were alone in dealing with their grief from a murder. So, coming together, it already provided a sense of healing to both of them, and they hope to extend that to other mothers in Albany,” said Asst. Attorney General, Michael Tabarrok, Attorney General’s Gang Prosecution Unit.
And… it was through these conversations that uniting these mothers through tragedy would go a long way.
“When the two of them started talking together, it became rapidly apparent that they needed each other. They were talking about how they process grief, how they were interacting with other people when it came to discussing the murders, and they just were trying to find that sense of normalcy,” said Asst. Attorney General Tabarrok.
But… more than anything else, Mothers Against Murders and Suicide (MAMAS) is about one thing:
Making the voices of these mothers heard.
“Part of this isn’t just to provide that grief share, but it’s to hold public officials accountable. To make sure the victims are being represented in court. Whether it’s the Police, the District Attorney’s office, the Attorney General’s office, judges, this about providing a sense of accountability to the victims to make sure they’re seen and heard,” said Asst. Attorney General Tabarrok.
And if you are a mother whose life has been impacted by a murder or suicide, you’re encouraged to join the group for their first meeting later on in May.
The first meeting for Mothers Against Murders and Suicide (MAMAS) will take place Monday morning, May 13 at 10 am, at 105 West Broad Avenue in downtown Albany.
