Men’s health expo ‘Haircuts and Hams’ hosted by several east Albany churches
ALBANY, Ga. – Several east Albany churches will be coming together this weekend for a men’s health expo. And… as one of the churches’ east Albany pastor told us, it’s sorely needed for the men.
The ‘Haircuts and Hams’ event is the combined effort from St. Paul’s Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Berchah Fellowship Church.
Minister, Angelo Knox from Berachah says bringing all these churches together is paramount to bringing the whole community together.
“The church is what reaches the community. And, a lot of times, we don’t get out as much as we can to get out and help people in the community, especially the surrounding east Albany community. We’re not only going to be giving away ‘haircuts and hams,’ but what we’re doing is making sure our brothers are healthy…” said Angelo Knox, Minister, Berachah Fellowship Church.
We’ve been told the goal is to get over 100 men to get out on Saturday to take action when it comes to their health.
Albany Cares Group representative, Tosh Sevier, who grew up in east Albany says most middle-aged men need a good jumping off point.
“But, we want to make sure our men are healthy. That they know their status, so they can get the proper treatment, and we can help navigate them to the health services that are readily available in our community,” said Tosh Sevier, Albany Cares Group.
But, the east Albany churches wanted to come together to help the next generation of men in their late 30s and early 40s.
“This is our next generation. We’re getting older, and we want the younger generation to continue to do great things in this community, and with the four churches and the coalition, we want to make sure our community is safe and can continue to strive,” said Minister Knox.
As the churches hope for a large turnout, they want this to help show a strong sense of unity in east Albany.
“I just want everyone to buy in to our community efforts. Things like this where we’re coming together and dispelling myths that we don’t want to work together. So, we want to get to a place where we’re able to power our community, where we’re able to create sustainable, long-lasting partnerships that create real impact and mobilization for our community,” said Sevier.
And, they want every woman whose a mother, a sister, a daughter, or a niece to get the male members of their family out this weekend.
The ‘Haircuts and Hams’ event will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, at 2605 Sylvester Road. The event will run until 1 p.m. in the afternoon.
