Local filmmaker proposes Black Heritage Trail before Dougherty Co. Commission
ALBANY, Ga. – The Dougherty County Commission heard out a major project Monday morning. One that would highlight major milestones in the black heritage of the county.
Local filmmaker, Clennon King came before the county commission Monday with the outline of a new project…
A Black Heritage Trail that would focus on many of the often forgotten historical moments in Dougherty county’s history.
“This thing that I’m looking at explains why the Civil Rights movement happened. This is not by accident that king came here. It’s not by accident that Charles Sherrod came here. There’s a reason, and so in large part, this heritage trail seeks to flesh that out,” said Clennon King, AugustineMonica Films Productions.
However, King proposed seeing more than just a few historical markers…
He suggested to the county commissioners the idea of statues as well as art pieces to help retell some of the history.
“…It seeks to explain certain event, seeks to dismiss a lot of the falsehoods that are associated with our history here. And, it basically is to establish a timeline, a solid timeline for people to understand, especially our children,” said King.
And, the county commission was unanimously on board with the idea of the heritage trail.
“I think this is an opportunity for the whole community to get excited about. Because of the fact that we need to know all of the history, not just some of the history that’s here in Dougherty county. And, the best way to do that is we always need to do what Mr. King has said and what I’ve been saying all the time: we need to tell our own story. Because if we don’t, someone else will,” said Anthony Jones, District 6 Commissioner, Dougherty Co. Commission.
“I think more than anything, this is a worthwhile investment in tax dollars that will more than pay for itself. It will more than pay for itself. It will see about our kids who are suffering from self-esteem because we haven’t told them our story,” said King.
With the county commission unanimously on board with the heritage trail, it’s going a long way in highlighting all of the historical significance in Dougherty county.
The proposed Black Heritage Trail would highlight over 20 different locations across Dougherty county.
