Len Lastinger student in serious condition after being struck by vehicle in Tifton
TIFTON, Ga. – An update to a story we have been following … We now know the child’s name who was struck by a car at a Tifton elementary school.
The family has confirmed that 5-year-old Isaiah Silva has suffered severe head trauma and has undergone surgery, and is still in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle at Len Lastinger Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon, as school was dismissed for the day.
The incident occurred as the boy ran across the street at approximately 2:55 p.m. when he was hit, according to officials.
He was swiftly transported to Tift Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Both the Tifton Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol are leading the investigation.
On Wednesday, the Georgia State Patrol confirms that Isaiah began to run across Lake Drive within the crosswalk in the path of a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The 71-year-old driver of the SUV appeared not to be speeding, and after impact, she reportedly offered first aid to Isaiah.
GSP says no charges are expected and the crash remains under investigation.
Dana Spurlin, Chief Information Officer for Tift County Schools, expressed gratitude to the community first responders and school staff for their prompt response.
In light of the events, Spurlin announced that there would be no GMAS testing at Len Lastinger Elementary today.
Testing will resume on Thursday, with fifth graders taking the science portion and all grades taking the second part of the math assessment on Friday. Other schools in the district will maintain their regular testing schedules.
Our heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to the family and those impacted by this tragedy.
