Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful plans community cleanup events for Earth Day

ALBANY, Ga. – Albany and Dougherty county are coming together for a major Earth Day celebration with a myriad of cleanups scheduled for the weekend.

Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful Director Jwana Washington says cleanup events will be going from Thursday through Saturday…

And…they’ll have quite a few sets of hands to help.

“This year, we have 66 teams and over 1,600 volunteers. And, I would like to point out that this year’s theme is ‘many hands make light work’ so we’re encouraging everybody to pitch their hands in order for us to make light work in cleaning up not just the trash, but the environment,” said Jwana Washington, Director, Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful.

In east Albany, Ward 1 Commissioner, Jon Howard is keeping up a spring tradition he’s had since first taking office 30 years ago.

And…he wants this weekend to be a learning experience, as well as a charitable one.

“I will say that the more I pass out flyers, the more concerned I am because you see a lot of folks that’s not keeping around their house, the community, their area clean. And, we’ve got to do a better job of re-educating this community, not just about the environment, but the whole world,” said Commissioner Jon Howard, Ward 1 Commissioner, City of Albany.

There’s also going to be plenty of opportunities to lend a hand…

As keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful will be holding events through the rest of the week, starting on Thursday through Saturday.

“Our Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful board members will be out in front of the airport with our Adopt-a-Road. We will be cleaning up our area down there as part of our efforts for the 35th annual Stash the Trash event. And, then, on the 19th, we’ll be in front of the Government Center, downtown with the government team, cleaning up or ‘Stashing the Trash’ in that area…” said Washington.

As more than 1,600 volunteers get set to pitch in for the city-wide cleanup on Saturday, the message is clear to residents that this is a good first step towards change.

Stash the Trash will take place on 9 am Saturday at Bethesda Community Church in east Albany.
