Straight-line winds produce damage in Valdosta, large hail falls in early morning storms
ALBANY, Ga. – It was a wild start to Wednesday morning weather-wise across south Georgia.
Many were awakened by Mother Nature to loud thunder, strong winds, and even reports of quarter to ping pong ball-sized hail pelting the ground.
In Valdosta, there are reports of widespread power outages, downed power lines, and trees blocking roads throughout the city, especially around Inner Perimeter Road and the Valdosta Mall area leaving hundreds of customers without power.
Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible and avoid unnecessary travel until emergency crews can fully assess and address the damage.
First responders are actively engaged in clearing roads and restoring power. Valdosta City Schools canceled classes today due to the severe weather.
In an afternoon survey, the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida confirms 75 mph, hurricane-force straight-line winds affected the city.
In Turner and surrounding counties there are reports of hail that damaged vehicles, roofs, trees, and outdoor furniture. As you can see in these photos, the hail was estimated to be as large as ping pong ball.
At this time, no injuries have been reported from the early morning severe weather.
