Secretary Raffensperger urges swift action as amendment to secure Georgia elections fails
ATLANTA, Ga. – Secretary Raffensperger expressed his deep concern as the proposed constitutional amendment to secure Georgia’s elections did not pass the House of Representatives on Crossover Day. HR 780 aimed to ensure that only American citizens vote in Georgia elections, enshrining that as an amendment to the Georgia Constitution.
Addressing the pressing need to safeguard the integrity of the 2024 election, Secretary Raffensperger reiterated the urgency for legislative action. HR780, sponsored by Representative Jesse Petra, sought to secure Georgia’s electoral processes by limiting voting eligibility to United States citizens who are residents of the state.
“The border crisis and the Administration’s failure to act makes it necessary for Georgia to take swift action,” said Secretary of State Raffensperger. “Multiple organizations with ties to Democrats are currently suing to end critical citizenship verification in our registration process, potentially exposing our elections to foreign interference, and diluting the power of legally registered voters.”
Today marked Crossover Day in the House, where HR780 was added to the Rules calendar and brought to the floor for consideration. The proposed constitutional amendment was seen as a crucial step toward preserving the integrity of Georgia’s elections, particularly as an unsecured Southern border continues to pose a threat to our Nation.
“Georgia’s elections are the safest in the nation, and I work every day to keep it that way,” emphasized Secretary Raffensperger. “That is why my office is leading the charge to defend Georgia’s citizenship verification law and pass legislation to close any loopholes and ensure that only American citizens are voting in our elections.”
As the amendment faces setbacks, Secretary Raffensperger remains unwavering in his commitment to a secure and transparent 2024 election. The Secretary calls on the General Assembly to address the concerns of Georgia’s voters promptly. He stresses the importance of taking immediate action to counteract potential threats posed by foreign influence and lawfare from the left.
“We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates to the public as we work together to protect the sanctity and security of Georgia’s elections,” concluded Secretary Raffensperger.
