Albany Police Chief Persley holds press conference, urges vigilance, driver safety after recent accidents
ALBANY, Ga. – Following two major traffic accidents in the last week, Albany Police Chief, Michael Persley met with us Monday morning to talk about what can be done to prevent accidents on the streets of Albany.
According to Chief Persley, the latest of these accidents took place at this West Albany intersection late Friday evening…
An accident that left two motorcycle drivers dead.
“Our preliminary investigation has determined that these two subjects were travelling westbound on Lincoln (Avenue). And, when they got to the intersection of Lincoln and Walnut, they were not able to negotiate the curb and had an accident. The investigation is still ongoing…” said Chief Michael Persley, Albany Police Department.
The other being a single car accident that left one Albany State student dead earlier in January.
When we spoke with an Albany State leader about it earlier, and how the university and student body responded to the tragedy earlier in the month.
“…Our students are so resilient, and I was just amazed yesterday and today to see them coming together, supporting each other, and even supporting the family…” said Dr. Terry Lindsay, VP of Student Affairs, Albany State University.
Chief Persley said during Monday’s news conference that in regards to these major accidents, reckless driving is the common factor with both instances.
But, ultimately, it comes down to one person…
The one who gets behind the wheel.
“It all starts with the operators of those vehicles, first and foremost. Making sure you’re in the right condition to drive, mentally and physically. If you’re upset about something, you don’t need to get behind the wheel. If you’re tired, you don’t need to get behind the wheel. If you’re in a hurry, a rush, like people every day…” said Chief Persley.
While Chief Persley has said the answer isn’t necessarily clear, he is still imploring drivers to keep their eyes where they belong, and that’s on the road.
Chief Persley says that APD is looking for more people to join the Police to help patrol to make sure drivers stay safe on the road.
