Georgia Peanut Commission holds 47th Annual Peanut Farm Show
TIFTON, Ga. – Peanut farmers from across the state came together in Tift county Thursday as the Georgia Peanut Commission held their 47th Annual Farm Show.
For peanut farmers across the state, weather over the last year has had some detriment on their peanut crop, some more than others.
“We had a pretty bad hurricane this past year. That was pretty rough on us…Well I think for peanuts we were good, but for cotton, we lost some yield there…” said Mallory Harvey, Baxley.
Just like Mallory, hundreds of peanut farmers came together for the 47th annual Georgia Peanut Commission Farm Show, with the goal of showing the latest in peanut farming for the coming year.
“You know, it’s the beginning of the year, you’re planning for the coming year. And, this is a day where you’ll have more than 100 exhibitors to see the products and services they offer to make you more profitable on the farm,” Rodney Dawson, Farm Show Chairman, Georgia Peanut Commission.
To plenty of farmers, 2024 could be a considered a rebound year by the Georgia Peanut Commission…
As many were impacted by weather beyond just storms.
“Unfortunately, in the past, we’ve had a real dry year, especially in certain areas that’s normally not dry like southwest Georgia. But, this year, they were extremely dry. So hopefully this year, weather will be permitting to have a good growing season,” said Dawson.
And, farmers like Mallory are optimistic coming out of the annual farm show about planting this year’s peanut crop.
“Well we learn a lot from the professors from the University of Florida, to the University of Georgia, the University of Alabama; there’s a lot of smart people here who can give us a lot of new updates and insight on how to grow better peanuts, and do better for the environment too,” said Harvey.
With the 47th annual show in the books, peanut farmers from across Georgia are optimistic about their crop in 2024.
According to the Georgia Peanut Commission, around 52% of all peanuts in the United States are grown in Georgia.
