“It’s a real gratifying experience. You know, seeing the kids, seeing the enjoyment they have and the willingness to learn and everything like that. They’re all really good kids. And, it’s just been a blessing to be able to spend time with them and do this for them,” said Chris Wheeler, Bill Miller Community Center, Supervisor.
“In Albany, in the environment we’re in, there is a lot of killings at young ages. The kids, these are the next grown ups. The next people that will takeover the world after we are gone. So, for them to have a good structure is very important,” said Jontavious Williams, Kids Holiday Camp, Instructor.
Young participants will be given the opportunity to partake in a diverse array of artistic and sporting activities during the program.
“We do all types of stuff because, you know, basketball is really big in the city, but we just don’t want to limit them to that. So, we do take them outside for football. They play soccer. They get to paint ceramic or coloring all different types of stuff. We do puzzles and we start off the day with like ice breaker activities with just them socializing and talking to each other. Making new friends and stuff like that,” said Wheeler.
Young participants in the camp share their experiences within the program and what Christmas means to them…
“I had so much fun, it’s good its fun. I made a lot of new friends,” said Cartrellis Christian, camp participant.
“The first moment I came here, it felt like it was home,” said Terell Keith, camp participant.
“I made a lot of friends and I was able to develop chemistry. It’s both about giving, getting and spending time with your family,” said Avery Jackson, camp participant.
“You can spend time with your family,” said Cartisha Christian, camp participant.
“I love Christmas because you can give people presents and you can have fun with your family,” said Cartia Christian, camp participant.
