APD provides safety tips against crime this holiday season
ALBANY, Ga. – While the holiday season is in full swing, it’s also the season for plenty of crimes of opportunity. We spoke with the Albany Police Department about some of the bigger crimes they’re concerned about.
Lieutenant Phares Taylor with the Albany Police Department says that they’re keeping an eye out, especially for those out shopping in person.
“There’s normally an uptick during the season, but what we can do is shoppers can be vigilant, and take notice of their surroundings when they’re buying gifts. Make sure that nobody is standing around their vehicle or anything like that. Make sure your vehicle is in a well-lit area or you’re shopping in daylight hours. Stuff like that,” said Lt. Phares Taylor, Albany Police Department.
But of course there’s another type of theft that law enforcement wants people to keep an eye out for…
Porch pirates looking to steal packages right off your front doorstep.
This is where Lieutenant Taylor says the police department’s newly implemented camera registry can shift things.
“…What that does is, it gives the police department access to your camera, and also any neighbors in the area, we have access to look at those cameras which gives us a better chance to catch those individuals doing it. And, more than likely, they don’t just do it one time. So, if we don’t catch them this time, they’re more than likely to re-appear…” said Lt. Phares Taylor, APD.
We also asked about another issue that could potentially pose a danger to some people’s driving, and that’s those who opt to get behind the wheel after “celebrating.”
“We know during the holiday season that people are going to have a good time. We just ask that you do it responsibly. If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Find you someone who’s not going to drink or they don’t drink. And, even if they’re not with you, you can give them a call to pick you up…” said Lt. Phares Taylor, APD.
And, there are a couple of things the average person can do to protect themselves this holiday season…
“…If you find yourself in a situation, where someone is being aggressive and it’s not you, give it up to them, let them go on, back off, give us a call. Even if it’s another vehicle, we’ll be on the look out for that vehicle…” said Lt. Phares Taylor, APD.
Law enforcement will be stepping up patrols to help minimize both thefts and drunk driving accidents to make sure that it’s a safe and crime free holiday for everyone.
Lieutenant Taylor also says to call Albany Crimestoppers at 229-436-8477.
