Phoebe expands its surgical robotics program

ALBANY, Ga. – Phoebe is enhancing its surgical robotics program with the latest and most advanced systems.

With the acquisition of two additional state-of-the-art “da Vinci XI systems”, which represent the pinnacle of advanced technology in the field, the Phoebe Putney Health System is further solidifying its commitment to providing cutting-edge medical care and innovative surgical solutions.

“Adding a second robot to our fleet, now that is the most up-to-date robot. We’ve had one already and now we are able to have another one. Americus also procured another robot, so we were able to expand it to the outlying facilities as well. We are really excited to get that and have more access to the robots so that we can provide minimally invasive, better surgery for the patients,” said Jason Langer, DO, Phoebe General Surgeon.

The instruments, which physicians guide in real-time through a console, provide a more immense range of motion and produces a highly-magnified, 3-D, high-definition view of the surgical area.

Phoebe general surgeon, Jason Langer takes us more into the world of robotic surgery.

“What I use to do laparoscopically, so through little incisions, with tiny instruments, I’ve switched now to robotics. What happens is wit the robot, it allows me to do finer movements. It actually allows me to do more movement with my hand than my natural hand can do. Which means I have to handle the tissue less; I can handle it more delicately. I can perform large surgeries through very small incisions. Meaning a quicker recovery time for the patient, less blood loss for the patient, less complications for the patient, and ultimately providing better quality care for the area,” said Langer.

Langer also addresses misconceptions about robotic surgery.

“One of the things I always get when it comes to saying that I am going to do robotic surgery is, “oh you’re not really doing the surgery.” I am doing everything. I always tell patients, it’s fancy laparoscopic surgery. Again, it allows me to move and control the camera myself, so I can get the best view, and the most safest view to do what I need to do,” said Langer.
