Moultrie prepping and protecting football athletes in the heat
MOULTRIE, Ga. – South Georgia it’s hot outside but it’ll be the warmest it’s been all week on Friday here’s some things high school football teams need to know to beat the heat.
“Friday night precautions should start on Thursday, should start on Monday honestly it’s all about staying hydrated all week long,” said Jaclyn Donovan, Athletic Training Services Coordinator.
Although the heat may be fierce, the Athletic Training Services Coordinator from Vereen Rehabilitation Center says summer condition should have these players prepared for the elements.
“You’re having to balance that when you talk about warm-ups versus a heat related illness, I don’t think somebodies going to get terribly overheated in a warm up and that goes back to summer conditioning,” said Donovan.
There have also been guidelines set in place for extreme heat temperatures.
“Georgia High School Association has guidelines laid out for practice and now this year playing in heat in humidity,” said Donovan.
Giving schools the responsibility…
“To have a wet bulb globe temperature device that measures that temperature and they have scales laid out so that’s basically your air temperature and your humidity,” said Donovan.
Athletic trainers will be geared with many cooling devices as well.
“An athletic trainer on a Friday night is going to have water, their going to have Gatorade, there going to have mustard packets or pickle juice maybe some electrolyte tabs,” said Donovan.
But, when its all said and done, Jaclyn Donovan believes…
“All states are going to be safe in following guidelines and precautions if the school has an athletic trainer your kids,” said Donovan.
