Hospice of Tift Area hosts Camp Reflections Grief Camp for Kids
TIFTON, Ga. – Grief is something that everyone tends to go through at some point in life and the Hospice Center in Tifton is hosting a camp to help children with grief in all its forms.
“The work of kids is play and I wanted to be able to give them that environment to be able to express their grief,” said Kathy Moneypenny, Bereavement Coordinator with Hospice of Tift Area.
Camp Reflection’s method to get children to open up about their trauma is through play.
“They process everything in life through play, if you listen to a child play you’ll learn more about yourself,” said Moneypenny.
If you never confront your feelings of grief…
“Then you are going to have that grief visit you later, it’s going to be there, whether you deal with it now or deal with it later that’s the thing,” said Moneypenny.
Children that attend Camp Reflections will go through a plethora of exercises to help them address their feelings.
“We’ll sit down and we’ll talk about the grief, we’ll talk about their experiences, we’ll talk about the things they can do. You know what kind of things can you say that’s appropriate or not appropriate,” said Moneypenny.
The reality about grief is…
“You can’t fix it and that’s one of the things people want to do and that’s why they get uncomfortable is because they can’t fix it,” said Moneypenny.
And, even with that being said…
“Each one of the kids in camp all of them have a different story, it’s their story to tell,” said Moneypenny.
