Domestic abuse victim group discusses how to empower abuse victims
(ALBANY, GA) – It’s been more than a week since suspect, Jon McMillian allegedly shot his estranged wife, Gwendolyn to death at a South Albany trailer park. We spoke with one neighbor off camera who told us about their history of domestic abuse.
“It’s important that individuals seek help at the first sign and don’t wait until it’s too late,” says Liberty House Executive Director, Diane Rogers.
McMillian’s estranged husband is accused of killing her, and a friend.
Albany Police say the couple had a previous history of domestic strife, with Jon McMillian just arrested late last year.
“…For someone with nothing to lose, a temporary protective order is not as safe,” says Rogers.
Liberty House says there are a couple things abuse victims can do to protect themselves and prevent another incident like what happened with Gwendolyn McMillian.”
Rogers tells us, “Certainly the most important thing is safety planning when it does happen and calling that crisis line, so that we can work out a safe way to get out of that relationship.”
Other tips include alerting a friend or neighbor to the abusive situation, ask them to call 9-1-1 should they hear a disturbance, keep a packed bag ready, and don’t hesitate to call police.
