Big Peanut Rededication Ceremony in Ashburn

Residents are confident the new monument will withstand the test of time.

ASHBURN, Ga. – Not long ago that Big Peanut you see behind me was battered and destroyed, but fast forward to today and Ashburn is celebrating its rededication to the Big Peanut it all knows and loves.

“This event means a lot to Ashburn and that is too fold as it helps put us on the map,” said Sarah Cook, Director of Business Development at Georgia Department of Agriculture.

In 2018 Hurricane Michael knocked down the Big Peanut in Ashburn leaving residents stunned…

“People were certainly disappointed and upset because it was such a part of our identity,” said Dana Whiddon, Turner County Commissioner.

Residents are confident the new monument will withstand the test of time.

“You’re not going to knock this peanut down anytime soon,” Tyron Spearman, Executive Director of National Peanut Buying Points Association.

It’s that spirit of determination that will keep it standing.

“As a resident of Turner County it’s a point of pride, we are very happy to be from the town where the Big Peanut is,” said Cook.

Because peanut farming is a major industry for the area.

“This monument is a way for us to educate how important peanuts are for nutrition, for our ag industry, and the importance of our peanut farmers,” said Cook.
