Albany citizens support Commissioner Fletcher amid accusations
(ALBANY, GA) – The Albany City Commission has been a hot topic in January over accusations against Ward 3 Commissioner, BJ Fletcher in regards to her challenging thousands of votes in December to the Dougherty County Board of Elections.
With some of the criticism of Fletcher taking a racial overtone.
“In a city that is more than 70% black, it is not okay for any commissioner, for a white commissioner especially to be trafficking in that kind of rhetoric,” said NAACP Interim-President, Amna Farooqi in a previous interview.
While there have been those who have accused Commissioner Fletcher, others are showing support. With one Albany business owner stepping forward in her defense.
Albany realtor, Cassandra Greene tells us, “…They had a list of people in dougherty county who had put in a change of address. They moved out of dougherty county. She simply wanted to have those names checked and verified. I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
She doesn’t see the conflict as a racial divide as others might suggest.
Commissioner Fletcher has stayed silent on the ensuing controversy, but those who stand with her say she was within her right ,to speak her mind.
“I feel like they were totally unfair because she has a right to her freedom of speech, just like they do.”
South Georgia TV reached out to Commissioner Fletcher for in regards to a statement, she responded back “I have made statements to no one or watched the news. I don’t know what they’ve said. At this time…I simply have no comment…”
