‘Operation Ceasefire’ movement to bring change to the Good Life City
'Operation Ceasefire' will start at four o'clock Saturday at 1926 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
ALBANY, Ga. – Several local businesses and groups are coming together this weekend for a grassroots movement that they call ‘Operation Ceasefire’.
One of the people spearheading ‘Operation Ceasefire’ is Barber, and CEO of a local group called the Wolfpack, Brian Walker.
For him and groups like Albany Cares, events like ‘Operation Ceasefire’ are first and foremost about stopping the violence.
“What we do, we get people in the community to come together, we also trial by fire all of the thoughts we have on how we can make the community better,” said Brian Walker, CEO, the Wolfpack.
The reason for the Wolfpack running the event is simple…
The ongoing violence in the city affects more than just those in the altercations…
“We believe that everybody has a mother, everybody has a brother, everybody has a father, everybody has a sister. So we can put the guns down with the seeds we’re planting today. They’ll grow for our children and our grandchildren in the future. If people are living longer, we’ll be able to populate more, we’ll be able to have more…” said Walker.
This Saturday, they plan to host an event for families for their kids, but they’re also doing something what walker calls gifts for the adults…
“The main gift we’re bearing is educational literacy. We’re also going to be informing the community that if you are not registered to vote, we are gonna point you in the right direction to help you get ready to vote. And we will be providing health literacy as well,” said Walker.
But, more than anything what they want is for anyone, no matter the age to feel safe in the Good Life City again.
“We want to go everywhere that there was an impact. To show people that it is okay to walk the neighborhoods again. It’s okay for your children to ride their bicycles again. It’s okay for children to play with one another again. Cause we live in a time now where we have parents who are not safe or they don’t feel safe,” said Walker.
As these groups come together in an effort to try and build back up to the Good Life City, they know that charity like this starts at home.
