City of Tifton applying for Chip Grant to bolster revitalization project

(TIFTON, GA) – After announcing a multi-million dollar revitalization project to bring affordable housing to South Tifton, the city is trying to get more funding through a Chip Grant from the state.

“You’ve got to start somewhere, and in an area that here to for, has not had a lot of investment, has not had a lot resale of pre-existing homes, we have to break that cycle…,” says Tifton Urban Redevelopment Authority Director, Bruce Green.

Planning has already begun on the site set for Old Omega Road, after more than three years of planning and community feedback.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority says they’ve also been working with the county school system to help Tift County kids as well.

Green tells us, “We as neighbors, we as citizens here need some place for our children to feel safe. So we’re building an activities center that’ll be adjacent to the new multi-family area.

With the City of Tifton being able to build more affordable homes through a Chip Grant, it would help continue to grow the City of Tifton

“In the end here’s what we get: we get a street that’s built out upon. We get a neighborhood that’s re-created and re-established. And the city in the long term benefits from the tax base as well as the sustainability of the neighborhood,” says Green.

The recipients of the Chip Grant will be announced in April.
