Dougherty County EMS receives narcan supply

(ALBANY, GA) – In Dougherty County, there’s been a major problem regarding opioid overdoses.

According EMS Director, Sam Allen, in less than 24 hours, they responded to another three, as opioid problems continue in the county.

“One of the patients got a total of 10 milligrams, they got two of these, and when we got him in the back of the truck, they had to start an iv, and give narcan through an IV access. 10 milligrams is a lot…,” says Allen.

Thanks to a grant through their partnership with Phoebe and the Moorehouse School of Medicine, Dougherty County EMS have received a surplus of narcan to help anyone who may be overdosing.

These nasal kits signal a major turn for Dougherty County EMT, as it helps them to fight a prevalent issue in the county.

As Phoebe’s Angie Barber says, each box they’ve received is another life that can be saved.

She tells us, “It may take one box, it may take two boxes, it may even take three or four. But where years ago it may have had to have been given in a different method, but can now be given nasally, and that’s very simple.”

With a problem like opioid abuse persisting throughout the community, it’s clear that it isn’t just relegated to one area of Dougherty County.

“It’s not one area of town, this is all over the city, all of the county. And we want people to know the danger, every time they’re taking these illegal street drugs,” says Allen.

While the new surplus of narcan is welcome, EMS are still asking that if anyone knows a person who’s overdosing to not hesitate to call, as Georgia has an amnesty rule in place.
