GSP cracking down on dangerous drivers for the holiday season

(ALBANY, GA) – As the holiday season continue to ramp up, law enforcement like the Georgia State Patrol at Post 40 in Albany are going to be stepping up to keep the roads safe for everyone.”

“Typically, as most people would expect around the holidays, there’s more traffic on the roads. People are wanting to go out and visit, be with family for shopping and different events. And even with the virus, we’re still expecting a large amount of traffic on the roadways,” says Post 40 Sergeant, Ross Covington.

Between Monday and New Year’s Day, law enforcement across the state will be cracking down on drunk drivers as well as distracted drivers.

In the case of Post 40, it’ll be all hands on deck through the 31st.

Sergeant Covington tells us, “Most of the state patrol will be on duty. We limit the amount of people who can be off on holidays, especially during peak travel times. So our manpower will be up this year. We’ll be out there stopping cars, grabbing people’s attention, we just want people to do the right thing.”

With the busiest travel days being December 24th, 26th, and January 1st, there’s going to be no shortage of law enforcement on the road.

But if you can’t drive, there is always an option to avoid being pulled over.

“What we want to encourage people to do is, if you’ve had something that would impair your driving abilities, whether it’s alcohol or something else, please don’t drive. Stay where you’re at, or get you a ride home,” says Covington.

The Georgia Department of Highway Safety is also encouraging anyone to call 911 if they see suspicious behavior on the road.
