(CORDELE, GA) – Corporal Avery Hillman of the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office was laid to rest Friday morning.

Hillman passed away the previous weekend due to complications from COVID-19.

“He was that individual that was always willing to go above and beyond. He loved his family, he loved his community, and he loved his country, even serving in two conflicts,” says Crisp County Sheriff, Billy Hancock.

Corporal Hillman served the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office for more than 30 years, but his dedication didn’t stop there.

He served in the armed forces, including in Operation: Desert Storm.

To Sheriff Hancock, Corporal Hillman was something else.

He tells us, “His whole life was about service, and when someone of that nature passes away, it’s a sting. I mean we know about the sting of death, and that’s what we’re in. Our office feels a little stung this week.”

To his family, his friends, and his fellow sheriff’s deputies, Corporal Hillman will be dearly missed by the community he served for three decades.

Sheriff Hancock says, “That void will always be there from here on out. But i’m certainly proud to have known him, to work with him, and to have managed Corporal Hillman.”
