(OGLETHORPE, GA) – Across Middle and Southwest Georgia, farmers got a chance to speak with Congressman, Sanford Bishop met with farmers as part of his farm tour.

With agriculture being Georgia’s largest commodity, it’s important to hear out all aspects.

“I’m here because i wanted to talk with farmers from these diverse commodities, to let them know what’s going on and to hear from them. So this way i’ll be armed with the information, when we go back, to make sure that we’re able to allow them to continue,” says Bishop.

Between recent problems induced by severe weather, such as Hurricane Michael in 2018, and the ongoing issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Congressman Bishop wanted to speak with local farmers.

Local farmer, Don Chase says that a tour like this helps to bolster the faith of a multi-faceted industry like agriculture.

Chase tells us, “We can call someone in his office, and they’ll know what we’re talking about. Each segment of the farm industry has its own concerns: each crop, each commodity. So it’s important…”

Given the recent struggles for Middle and South Georgia farmers, getting to hear about some of the struggles could help to put local farmers back in the right direction in the event of future adversity.

Congressman Bishop says, “We’ve had many people who were unable to get food because the supply chains were broken, and some of the production was limited because of COVID-19.”

Bishop also listed with farmers in Camilla.
