MOULTRIE, Ga. – A lightning strike near a walking trail killed a 9-year-old girl and seriously injured her older sister Friday afternoon.

Nicol Mateo Pedro, of Moultrie, was walking with her mother and 15-year-old sister on the walking trail along side South Main Street when a storm came in around 5 p.m., says Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock.

“The two girls and their mother were on the waking trail and a storm came up and they took shelter at a rest bench with shelter over it and lightning struck a tree adjacent to the shelter and when the bolt of lightening came down the tree and hit the ground and of course the ground’s wet and it conducted the electricity that much stronger. The lightning ran up the bench and the little 9-year-old girl was sitting on that bench,” says Brock
