27th Annual Wild Chicken Festival returns to Fitzgerald this weekend

FITZGERALD, Ga. – One of South Georgia’s quirkiest and most beloved events is back! The 27th Annual Wild Chicken Festival kicks off Friday, March 20, and runs through Saturday, March 21, in historic downtown Fitzgerald, celebrating the city’s famous wild Burmese chickens that have roamed the community since the 1960s.

The free, family-friendly festival features live music, arts and crafts vendors, delicious food, and activities for all ages, including a chicken crowing contest that’s become a fan favorite.

New this year is the Run for the Roost 5K walk/run, sponsored by the Cancer Coalition of Ben Hill & Irwin County. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday with the race starting at 8 a.m., followed by a one-mile fun run at 9 a.m. You can register ahead of time online here.

Other highlights include a street dance on Friday night, an antique tractor show, live musical performances, and plenty of hands-on activities for kids. The festival opens Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. and continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
