Willie Mae Dexter Named 2026 “This Is Your Life” Honoree

CORDELE, Ga. – The Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce recently announced that retired educator and community servant Willie Mae Dexter has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the prestigious “This Is Your Life” honor.

“This Is Your Life” was established 2000 to recognize individuals who have dedicated years of service to improving the community and making a lasting difference in the lives of others. While Ms. Dexter may be retired from the classroom, her commitment to serving others has never slowed down.

A lifelong educator, advocate, and volunteer, Ms. Dexter devoted more than four decades to the Crisp County School System, including 34 years at Southwestern Elementary School, where she served in numerous leadership and teaching roles. Even after retirement, she continued mentoring and tutoring students through programs such as STAR and the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Beyond education, Ms. Dexter remains actively involved in civic and community organizations throughout Crisp County. She has served in leadership roles with the Cordele Lions Club, the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce, Pruitt Hospice, Keep Crisp Beautiful, the Crisp County Board of Elections and Registration, and numerous other organizations dedicated to improving the community. She also faithfully serves through her church, Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church.

“Ms. Willie Mae is one of those people who asks if she can help – she does not wait to be asked,” said Monica Simmons, President of the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce. “Her servant’s heart and dedication to our community make her truly deserving of this honor.”

Ms. Dexter will be recognized during a special dinner on Thursday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m. at Cordele First Church. The event is one of nearly 30 activities celebrating the 77th Annual Watermelon Festival. In addition, Ms. Dexter will serve as the Honorary Grand Marshal for the annual Watermelon Parade.

Community members interested in sponsoring the dinner or purchasing tickets are encouraged to contact the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce at 229-273-1668.
