Washington sought in Americus death investigation

Police say suspect spotted fleeing the scene, caught after short chase

AMERICUS, GA – Americus Police along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announce the arrest of a man in connection to the death of a local woman.

Americus Police Chief Mark Scott says his officers arrived at a motel in the 1100 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard around 10 this morning to a report of an unresponsive woman, later identified as 38 year old Nicole Ileia Keys.

Keys was taken to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center where she later died. Chief Scott says an autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur to determine the actual cause of death.

Scott says a person of interest was identified fleeing the scene and was arrested following a short pursuit by officers of the Americus Police Department. The arrestee has been identified as 38 year old Carlos Santana Washington of Americus. Washington was arrested on outstanding warrants and is also being charged with attempting to elude a police officer and numerous traffic charges.

Additional charges may be made pending a determination of cause of death.
