Visit Valdosta Celebrates National Tourism Day Thursday, May 7

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Visit Valdosta is celebrating National Tourism Day on Thursday, May 7 to recognize the powerful impact of tourism on the local economy and community. The day will be honored with a proclamation shared by Mayor Scott Matheson at the Rainwater Conference Center.
According to a recent press release, tourism continues to be a major economic driver for Valdosta and Lowndes County, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in visitor spending each year. From local restaurants and retail shops to hotels and attractions, visitor dollars directly support businesses, create jobs and contribute to the overall quality of life for residents.
“Tourism is more than just visitors passing through, it’s a vital part of our community’s success,” said David DiSalvo, President and CEO of Visit Valdosta. “Every traveler who chooses Valdosta helps fuel our local economy, supports small businesses and contributes to projects and initiatives that benefit our residents every day. National Tourism Day is an opportunity to celebrate that impact and the people who make it possible.”
In 2024 alone, visitor spending in Lowndes County generated more than $458 million in economic activity, supporting over 5,800 jobs and producing more than $38 million in state and local tax revenue. These contributions help fund essential public services like infrastructure, parks and public safety, reducing the tax burden for local households.
Mayor Matheson will officially proclaim May 7 as National Tourism Day in Valdosta, recognizing the collective efforts of hospitality workers, business owners and community partners who play a role in creating memorable visitor experiences.
“Tourism strengthens our city in so many ways,” said Mayor Matheson. “It drives economic growth, supports local jobs and showcases everything that makes Valdosta a great place to live and visit. We’re proud to celebrate National Tourism Day and highlight the continued growth of our community.”
