(TIFTON, GA)- Julie Smith is the first female mayor in the history of Tifton, and Monday night, she was sworn in for her second term.

We spoke with Mayor Smith Wednesday morning about her first term.

“Making sure that we’re looking out for Tifton as a whole is something that’s very important to all of us. And so I would say working together as a council and building partnerships. So that’s what we want to focus on this term,” says Mayor Smith.

She’s looking ahead to continuing to lead Tifton.

This includes continuing the i-75 hub community’s relationship with the local agricultural colleges and medical facilities.

Mayor Smith tells us, ”I would say working as a council and building partnerships, and that’s what we want to build upon with this term over the next four years. We have great partners in this community and things going on with Tift Regional Medical Center, and the medical community, and significant expansion there.”

For Tifton’s first female mayor, the challenges of her second term also  means continuing to restore parts of the city.

She says, “For many, many years, parts of South Tifton have been ignored. The infrastructure is in poor condition, we have a lot of dilapidated properties, and crime has increased significantly. So we really wanted to focus on that area.”

Mayor Smith originally served as part of the Tifton City Council.
