School board’s planned name change not a popular idea with some citizens

AMERICUS, Ga. – With plans to move the Americus-Sumter County High already in place, the school board feels that a name change is also in order. The proposed name would remove “Americus” and the school would be known as Sumter County High School.

The student council put forth a motion in January asking the school board to reconsider their decision.

Americus Mayor Barry Blunt agrees with the motion.

“Americus High has a rich history and tradition in Americus and we felt like the Americus name needs to remain associated with the high school,” Blunt said.

Many in the community are in agreement, but whether or not the name change will go into effect remains to be seen.
