Fitzgerald advances, Colquitt County eliminated in H.S. football semifinals
FITZGERALD, GA – The High School football semifinals took place over the weekend with two teams in the coverage area looking to book their ticket to the state championship.
In Fitzgerald, the Purple Hurricanes (13-0) kept their undefeated streak alive after a 19-9 win over Fellowship Christian on Friday night.
The Purple Hurricanes shut out the Paladins (12-1) in the first half, but the team made a comeback attempt in the second half by scoring nine points to narrow the lead. After a failed 2-point conversion, Fitzgerald ran the clock out to get the win and secure its trip to Atlanta for the third straight year.
The Purple Hurricanes will face Thomson (13-1) in Atlanta on Friday afternoon.
Over in Moultrie, the Colquitt County Packers (13-1) took on Carrollton in what was a state championship game in its own way.
The first half was all offense as the Packers and Trojans traded blows, with Carrollton (14-0) leading 21-17 heading into the half.
It was a defensive battle in the second half, but the Trojans would outscore the 2022 South Georgia Television Team of the Year 14-10 to come away with the 35-27 win, earning a trip to the 7A state championship against Mill Creek next Saturday.
