FBI takes lead in Cordele bank robbery case
25 year old Donald Wellons to face federal bank robbery charge per Cordele P.D.; Crisp Sheriff's PIO
CORDELE, GA – We’re getting new details in Tuesday’s 10 minute long bank robbery investigation and subsequent arrest of 25 year old Donald Wellons, who is being held in the Crisp County Detention Center.
Wellons was apprehended shortly after the Planter’s First Bank branch in Cordele was robbed Tuesday morning.
Wednesday, Cordele Police Lieutenant Charles Pheil says after being taken into custody at his Cordele apartment where some $5,000 in stolen cash was recovered, Wellons is now of interest to the FBI, with Cordele Police relinquishing as the lead investigative agency.
Crisp County Public Information Officer Haley Little confirms the CPD account, noting it’s a FBI charge of bank robbery that Wellons is being held under in the facility.
Cordele Police Sergeant Michael Telfair, who quickly recognized and knew the location of the suspect’s home where Wellons was ultimately found, praised his partner Cordele Patrolman Kevin Kendrick for his assistance in Wellons’ arrest.
