Coffee baseball completes season sweep over Veterans
This was an important game for both teams, as this was a 5A, Region 1 showdown.
After a scoreless first inning, we begin our action in the top of the second inning. Ty Tyson is on the mound for Veterans. He delivers a beautiful breaking ball that catches the outside corner of the plate, and that’s a called strike three.
Later in the same inning, Tyson finds himself in a two-out, bases-loaded jam. Ben Lingenfelter at the plate for Coffee, but all he can muster is a harmless fly ball to left, and the Warhawks get out of the inning.
To the bottom of the second, Coffee’s Trevor Gruszka showing his stuff now. He rears back and blows one past the hitter, and that’s a Trojans strikeout early on in the inning.
To the top of the third we go, Warhawks in another jam, just one out. The ball is hit sharply to third base. They turn one, then he fires to first and the throw is in time! Great stretch by the first baseman Al Lorenzo and that double play will end the inning. Warhawks with an outstanding defensive sequence.
Bottom three now, Gruszka walks Al Lorenzo and the Warhawks have the bases loaded up.
But the Trojans don’t panic. Mark Lauretson at the dish and Gruszka induces a weak ground ball to first base. No harm, no foul. After three innings of play, still no score.
Moving to the top of the fourth, Trojans with runners on. Ben Lingenfelter at the plate again, but this time he comes through. He rips one over to third and it’s off the third baseman’s glove. A.J. Wilkerson will trot home with ease, and the Trojans finally break the scoreless tie.
Coffee takes game one, 3 to nothing, and the Trojans come right back and win game 2 of the doubleheader, 9-2. The Trojans complete the sweep over Veterans. Up next for the Trojans, a road battle with Warner Robins on Tuesday night.
