Millions of dollars worth of upgrades and renovations approved by City Commission

ALBANY, Ga. – Tuesday night, City Commissioners and Mayor Bo Dorough gathered virtually to discuss and approve future projects for the City of Albany.
The Mayor and Commissioners approved the street resurfacing phase III contract for an estimated total expenditure of $6,188,594.35. The funding sources will be SPLOST VII, TSPLOST, and Local Matching Infrastructure Grant (LMIG).
The project consists of resurfacing approximately 24 miles of City streets to include demolition and removal of designated areas of damaged asphalt pavement, concrete pavement, and curbing. It also consists of the marking and striping of the roads. The estimated completion time is 180 calendar days.
The governing bodies also approved the contracting with W J Kirksey Construction to renovate the Public Works Crew Quarters for a total expenditure of $788,900.00.
W J Kirksey Construction was the lowest responsive and responsible bidder. W J Kirksey has performed work on previous city construction and renovation projects. The City of Albany will provide site work, and the contract time for this project is 180 calendar days.
Stacey Rowe, Director of Utility Operations – Public Works, expressed, “This is a great project that will provide an up to date building for our crews to report to work and a place they can take pride in for many years to come.”
Also, the Mayor and Commissioners discussed contracting the renovations of Bill Miller and Henderson Gyms for $470,068.55 each, totaling $940,137.10 by LRA Constructors, Inc. of Albany, GA. The funding source is SPLOST VII.
Joel Holmes, Director of Recreation & Parks, stated, “The renovations to these two gyms will give us the ability to attract more programming opportunities for our citizens. It will make the facility more attractive and modern following the Club at Thornton design, making it a facility that users can be proud of in their neighborhoods.”
The scope of this project is to furnish all labor, materials, and equipment necessary for the full renovation of Bill Miller Gym (312 Vick Street) and Henderson Gym (701 Willard Avenue). It will take a projected 180 days to complete the projects.
