City of Valdosta appoints Marcus Haynes as Fire Chief

VALDOSTA, Ga. –The City of Valdosta has named Marcus Haynes as the new fire chief of the Valdosta Fire Department.

A Valdosta native, Haynes brings nearly 20 years of experience with the department, where he has served in several roles since joining in 2007. His previous positions include firefighter, sergeant, lieutenant, accreditation manager, deputy fire chief, and most recently acting fire chief.

Haynes holds a bachelor’s degree in fire science administration from Waldorf University and recently earned a master’s degree in public safety administration. He also holds the Chief Fire Officer designation and serves as a peer reviewer, helping fire professionals nationwide achieve certification.

Throughout his career, Haynes has earned multiple certifications and recognitions, including Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector, and Fire Investigator. He has also been recognized as a regional and national firefighter of the year by the American Legion. He is also a member of Georgia Search and Rescue Task Force 2.

City officials say Haynes has played a key role in strengthening the department through training, recruitment, and leadership initiatives, and is known for his focus on teamwork and professional development.

As fire chief, Haynes will oversee daily operations and continue efforts focused on training, preparedness, and community engagement.

Haynes says he is honored to take on the role and looks forward to continuing to serve the Valdosta community.
