Michelle’s Formal Wear damaged by fire in downtown Adel Tuesday morning

ADEL, Ga. — A downtown Adel business with more than three decades of service to the community was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday morning.

According to a statement from the Cook County Chamber of Commerce, a fire destroyed the prom and homecoming side of Michelle’s Formal Wear, located at 101 S. Burwell Avenue in downtown Adel. The bridal portion of the business remains fully operational, staff reported.

Michelle’s Formal Wear stated the fire began at approximately 8:03 a.m. The business, which has operated in Adel for nearly 32 years, described the loss as devastating and said first responders arrived within minutes and continued working to extinguish the blaze.

The City of Adel Fire Department initially advised residents to use caution due to heavy smoke in the area of 4th Street and Burwell Avenue. Fire crews remained on scene working to contain the fire.

Business owners said they will contact customers as soon as possible regarding dresses on layaway or special order and asked for patience as they determine next steps.

The Chamber of Commerce called the fire a major loss for Cook County and thanked the Adel Fire Department and other responding agencies for their quick response and efforts to contain the blaze.

No additional details about injuries or the cause of the fire have been released at this time.
