Albany State volleyball goes undefeated in 2023 SIAC Crossover Tournament

Lady Rams went 5-0 over the weekend to remain unbeaten in the conference

ALBANY, GA – The 2023 SIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament wrapped up Saturday as Albany State finished with five wins and no losses.

14 teams competed in the tournament but not every team played each other. All 14 teams were scheduled five matches in the two-day event. Some teams struggled to win their games, others lost only one game, and a couple won every single game.

One of those teams were ASU, which swept the competition over the weekend. The Lady Rams did not allow a single win in any of their matches as they swept Kentucky State, Tuskegee, Central State, Lemoyne-Owen, and Lane College on Friday and Saturday.

“We improved a lot as a team,” Lady Rams head volleyball coach Verniece Graham said. “A lot of things that we’ve been working on throughout this season kind of came together during this tournament. I’m looking forward to our next half of the season.”

Despite being perfect over the weekend – and in the conference – the Lady Rams enter the next half of the season 9-8. They lost eight games this season to non-conference opponents this season. While it does not affect ASU in the SIAC standings, they still want to win every game.

Still, Graham said her team remained positive throughout the losses, and even lit a fire under them as they began conference play.

“Our team still had the confidence I needed them to have because it wasn’t like we were getting dominated by those schools, we were still in the games,” Graham said. “We just had minor touches we needed [to fix]. If we were able to play those teams again now, it would be a different ball game. Their confidence is still what it was.”

Golden Rams have 15 games left this season, with five of them against non-conference opponents. One of them on Tuesday night against Valdosta State (10-4, 3-0 GSC).
