First manned trash collection site in Mitchell County opening Monday

CAMILLA, Ga. – The Mitchell County Board of Commissioners has announced that a manned trash collection site, the first of its kind in the county, will become operational Monday, March 22.

Located on Hwy. 37 across from the Justice Center, the site will be open 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday and 1pm-5pm on Sundays.

A compactor will accept household garbage bags and lawn trimmings in bags from residents of the unincorporated areas of Mitchell county not served by municipal collections. There will be additional dumpsters at the site for cardboard boxes and small electronics.

Trees and woody debris, construction debris, large appliances such as refrigerators and washers, tires, furniture, mattresses, and metal will not be received at the new site. Those items must be taken to the landfill located at 3889 Locast Road in Pelham. Additionally, contractors must use the landfill at Locast Road only.

This is the first of three sites planned for manned trash collection. Additional sites will be in the Hopeful area of Hwy. 97 and the current John Collins site. The current MLK site will begin the process of closing permanently on April 30, 2021.

These sites are being opened in an effort to better serve the community and keep the county cleaner. A Code Enforcement officer checking for illegal dumping in the county issuing citations as necessary.
