Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film adaptation of ‘Little Women’ looks amazing
Greta Gerwig has filmed a remake of “Little Women,” Louisa May Alcott’s classic book about four humble sisters named Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy growing up outside Civil War–era Boston.
Vanity Fair offered a behind the scenes peek of the Massachusetts set, near where Alcott and her three sisters grew up. Gerwig heavily researched the locations she used, and carefully chose paintings and art to reflect the era.
Saoirse Ronan, who starred in Gerwig’s debut as a solo director, 2017’s Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird,” plays Jo March.
While “Lady Bird,” based on Gerwig’s own life, was a massive success for her, this film feels even more personal.
“This feels like autobiography,” she said. “When you live through a book, it almost becomes the landscape of your inner life. … It becomes part of you, in a profound way.”
Timothée Chalamet plays opposite Ronan as Laurie, the boy next door who is friends with Jo, and who ends up proposing to her.
“Jo is a girl with a boy’s name, Laurie is a boy with a girl’s name,” Gerwig said. “In some ways they are each other’s twins. They find each other before they’ve committed to a gender. It wouldn’t be wrong to call Saoirse handsome and Timothée beautiful. Both have a slightly androgynous quality that makes them perfect for these characters.”
The film also stars Laura Dern, Emma Watson, and Meryl Streep.
“Little Women” will be released on Dec. 25.
