Crisp County Lions Club recognizes Star Students
Crisp County High School and Crisp Academy Seniors, Justin Walls and Trey Williams were recognized with the Star Student Award.
The award is given to the students at the top of their class, in their respective schools.
The two students were honored at the Cordele Lions Club Tuesday afternoon for their academic efforts.
Williams said, “It’s just such an honor, I have a lot of competitive people in my class, let alone the district, and I thank god for giving me the ability.”
Walls tells us, “It means a lot, and I’ve put in a bunch of hard work. I wasn’t expecting to be recognized.”
But I guess I put in enough hard work, and hard work pays off.”
To earn the award, the students had to have the highest SAT score in their class, and be in the top 10 percent of their class GPA.
The two students also got to nominate one teacher who left an impact on them during their time in high school.
Walls selected his band teacher, Andy Bell. While Williams selected his science teacher, Susan McKinney.
Williams said on-stage to the Lions Club, “I chose Ms McKinney to be my star teacher because she’s the best teacher I’ve ever had. Everybody knows chemistry and biology are difficult, but she can explain it in a way all of her students can understand.”
Walls spoke about what he had heard of Bell before even getting to high school, saying, “He became sort of this larger-than-life figure to me. And when I got to meet him in 9th grade, I realized, that he was.”
Williams and McKinney weren’t just the Star Student and Star Teacher recipients for Crisp Academy, the two also received the honor for the entire Crisp County School System.
They will have the chance at being the best student and teacher in Southwest Georgia.
“I look forward to it. I’m not really sure how it goes. I’ll talk to some of my buddies at Georgia who have,” said Williams.
Both students will look to continue their success at the next level, with Trey Williams planning to attend the University of Georgia in the Fall.
The Star Student and Teacher for Southwest Georgia will be announced on Monday March 18th at Middle Georgia State University in Macon.
